What you'll learn in this photography class:

This all-day intensive workshop will combine shooting, processing, developing and printing into one action-packed day.

First we’ll meet at the Darkroom (check the location of your class in the left column) and we'll demonstrate how to properly load film and set up your camera. You'll get a refresher on shooting mechanics and using your light meter, then we'll each shoot a roll of film in the surrounding neighborhood. From there you’ll learn how to process the exposed film using a film reel and developing tank, and start making contact prints.  Finally, we’ll be enlarging negatives onto traditional darkroom paper, so that you can take home beautiful 8x10 prints that you’ve made entirely on your own.

Who should take this class

Intermediate and experienced digital shooters who want to try shooting film.  Anyone interested in the overall process of analog film capture, processing and printing in a classic darkroom setting.

What to bring

Bring your film-based 35mm SLR or rangefinder camera if you have one.  We do have a limited number of cameras available for rental at $10 per class.  Since this is an all-day class we will have a lunch break, so you might want to bring lunch.  There are restaurants and cafes nearby as well.

COVID POLICY: Masks are required for this class. Students will be asked to wear masks while inside the darkroom at all times.

If you've never taken photos in manual mode, we highly recommend taking 1 Day Workout: Camera Warm-Up!  or Digital Photo I, or at the very least Crash Course: Camera Basics, prior to taking this class.

Materials provided (included in cost of the class)

  • 1 roll of black and white film (400 ISO, 24 exp)
  • All resin-coated photographic paper

Question from Philip G.
Hi all, I do not have an old film-based SLR. If I decide to rent a manual SLR camera from the class, how much will that cost? How many of them are available? Is it preferred to buy a camera for this class? Thanks!
Answer from Jenn C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi! It is advisable for students to bring their own old film-based SLR if you have one, but if not, the school has manual SLR cameras you can rent for $10.
Question from Georg R.
Would a 35mm rangefinder camera be appropriate to bring instead of an SLR?
Answer from Jenn C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Yes, a rangefinder camera would be perfectly acceptable!

Max was super patient and attentive to each students needs, including my own. I came in not even knowing what ISO was. Max wasn’t supposed to come outside with us for the shooting portion but he popped out to help me with my first shot and was really patient in doing so. The class was so informative, fun, and rewarding. I met some really awesome new friends as well. I am definitely booking another class to further expand my film/photography skills. Highly suggest. This class was a surprise birthday present from my husband and it was probably the best present he’s ever given me.
