In this class, students will learn basic techniques of the ancient art of shibori indigo dying. Originating in Japan in the 8th century, shibori dying uses rich blue dye from the indigo plant to create beautiful patterns in fabric through twisting, bunching, and binding.
We will explore Kumo, Arashi and Itajime techniques, which all create different
patterns depending on the way the fabric is folded and bound before dying.
Included in the class are dye vats, sample material for practicing, and various resist materials.
Required Materials:
Students should bring white 100% cotton fabric items to dye, such as t-shirts, kitchen towels, leggings, bandanas, tote bags, table runners, pillow covers, or plain cotton fabric, along with plastic bags to take home potentially wet material.
Please do not bring large items such as sheets, towels, rugs, or curtains, as our vats are not big enough to accommodate. Dying is a messy process, so it would be best to wear clothes that you wouldn’t mind getting stained.
