What you'll learn in this sewing class:
Learn all the basics of sewing with jersey & knit fabrics in just a few (super fun) weeks!
Students will focus on learning basic sewing skills using stretch knits. Everybody loves to wear knits because of the comfort they bring. Did you know that sewing knits really isn’t as hard as everyone seems to think. We’ve designed a 15 hour sewing class.
This is a sewing course is designed for the sewing student who’s had some basic experience. The course is 15 hours in total divided up between 6 weekly classes.
Each class is project oriented and each student will leave classes with their finished wearable projects.
Part 1:
- Introduction to sewing with knit fabrics.
- Which needle? Which Stitch? Seam Allowances for knits?
- Review of threading & operating the sewing machine.
- Learn basic clothing construction.
- Project: Leggings/Workout Pants
Part 2:
- Review of sewing with jersey & knits.
- Introduction to reading sewing patterns
- Project: Knit Skirt
Part 3:
- Fabric School: Learning different types of knits, Which fabrics work best for which projects? Determining which knit is which?
- Introduction to reverse applique with knits.
- Project: Knit Top
Part 4:
- Introduction to sewing with knit fabrics.
- Which needle? Which Stitch? Seam Allowances for knits?
- Review of threading & operating the sewing machine.
- Project: Wrap Dress
Important things to note:
- This includes free Sew Club classes during AND one month past your classes. Sew Club is a great time to catch up on anything you fall behind on or just sew whatever you'd like. There are no makeup classes if you miss a session. Cost of Sew Club is normally $20/class.
Required Materials:
Materials you will need to bring to class:
Fabric is NOT included. Woven Fabrics are available for purchase at the M Avery Designs Studio for $12 per yard. Stretch Knit Fabrics are available for purchase at the M Avery Designs Studio for $16 per yard. We have a variety of types, colors & prints, but keep in mind we are not a fabric store. Students also have the option of purchasing fabrics elsewhere before the class. Details & amounts are below.
Supplies Needed:
- Skirt: Fabric that is 45″ wide – Approx. 2 yards. Fabric that is 60″ wide 1.5 yards.
- Top: Fabric that is 45″ wide – Approx. 2 yards. Fabric that is 60″ wide 1.5 yards.
- Leggings: Fabric that is 45″ wide – Approx. 2.5 yards. Fabric that is 60″ wide 2.5 yards.
- Dress: Fabric that is 45″ wide – Approx. 4 yards. Fabric that is 60″ wide 3.5 yards.
If you are buying fabric from somewhere besides M Avery Designs Sewing Studio, be sure to purchase, good quality knit jersey fabric made of cotton or polyester. Make sure it isn't very thin knit fabric. Make sure the stretch is at least 50%.
Refund Policy
There are no monetary refunds for canceling registration or not showing up to any classes.
- If you need to reschedule a class, this needs to be done at least 6 business days before the class starts.
- No shows and last minute cancellations (within 6 business days of the class) cannot reschedule.
We reserve the right to cancel a class without sufficient enrollment. If this happens to you, you'll be notified at least 2 full days before the class starts. You can choose to have the cost of the class fee fully refunded or you can apply the balance of the class to your account to be used for a future class or lesson.
We are not able to pro-rate any weeklong classes for non-attendance one session.

Getting into the building:
There are two entrances.
Entrance 1 (closest to studio) is on Monroe St. about halfway between 7th & 8th Street. Door is to the right of "Shaka Bowl" & to the left of "School of Rock. Walk to elevator, come to 3rd floor, make left and you can't miss the antique sewing machine in the hall. Suite E306.
Entrance 2 is on 8th street, just past the corner store. Elevator is a quick right after you come in door, come to 3rd floor, make left, make another left and walk to the end of the long hallway. You can't miss the antique sewing machine in the hall outside our door. Suite E306
Getting up to our studio taking stairs: If you'd like to avoid the elevators, enter the building using the door to the right of the Shaka Bowl Entrance on Monroe Street, about halfway between 7th & 8th streets. Walk in and you'll see a stair case. These will go up to second floor. Once on second floor head to the right and make your way to the south east corner of the building (closes to 7th street). You'll see another set of stairs. Take these up to the third floor, make a left out of the stair well and you'll see our studio at the end of the hall.
Parking:
Sadly, there is no longer free parking any more. You must find street parking on the streets provided for visitor parking. Most of the streets require you to use the Park Mobile App. to pay for your parking.
There is a paid parking garage behind our building. Follow Jackson St. until you get to 7th, make a left and you'll see the parking garage entrance.
We encourage our students to take public transportation, uber/lyft or walk to the studio.
When parking on street make sure sign on the street is white with green writing and says "Resident parking only. All others 4 Hour Limit."
ALSO make sure there isn't street cleaning happening during the time you'll be parking there.

If you are walking or coming from the light rail, come in the entrance on 8th street between Monroe & Jackson (but closer to Monroe).
-Make an immediate left a for elevator
-Come up to the third floor.
-Make a left off the elevator, make another quick left and keep walking to other side of the building. You'll see our vintage sewing machines in the hall. Suite E306
