Description

What you'll learn in this furniture class:

Designed for beginners with little to no woodworking experience, this five-session class covers wood physics, shop safety and etiquette, an introduction to joinery concepts, and hands-on experience with the most commonly used woodworking machines.

The project for this class is a small side table featuring half-laps, bridle joints, and a round top.

The goal of this course is to build a foundation of skills and knowledge so you can work independently on simple projects or move forward with more advanced classes.

All tools, materials and safety equipment are provided.

Please note:

  • Wear shop-appropriate clothing--comfortable shoes and no loose or hanging items.
  • Bring a pencil and paper to take notes (optional)

Taught by Michelle - she's a great teacher and very talented at what she does. I had no real experience with power tools and feel like I learned a ton. Class was very fun and light, but felt kind of intense how much you have to learn to put the project together. Definitely felt it was worth the time and the money for the experience. Felt invigorated after every class, even in the middle of the week, and hey this table's pretty good. Excited to do more - thanks Michelle!

I thought it was good though since we didn’t set up the machines ourselves (which I assume was partly due to time / partly safety), replicating the project would be difficult. However, this was a good introductory class and the project included a lot of different elements. I think I’ll take another class to feel more comfortable on the machines.

Finished the class with a hand constructed table! Instructor Kate was very knowledgeable. Despite the small class limit (6), pace was a little slower than would have liked due to having only one machine, waiting for others to finish using.

The workshop was a phenominal experience! The instructors clearly mapped out the project from the start, demonstrated the appropriate methods of using each machine, explained what to check before beginning work on each process, and maintained a friendly, professional attitude at all times. Limiting the class to 6 students allowed everyone's questions to be answered and provided the perfect balance for working individually and as part of the team. Watching other students use the machinery reinforced the steps we were taught to follow in set up, use, and safety. All materials necessary were provided. I look forward to continuing my education at Makeville Studio through additional classes, booking and booking studio time. I highly recommend this studio and this Workshop.

Excellent class. Perfect balance of hands on work and basic instruction. I felt like the class size was perfect and allowed each student to have one on one time but also enough time to work independently. I would highly recommend this class!

Fun class, Michelle was really great and into teaching us how to troubleshoot and figure things out if we ran into problems which I found really nice. though i liked the other 5 people in the course, the days where one person couldn't make it definitely made it easier not having to rush through to finish everything for the day.

Hi Solange, the link you provided is a class from a different school. Based on the description, the Intro to Woodworking completes a project, while the one-session class from the link you provided does not make a project. You can check the description of each class to know the difference between the two. Thanks.

Question from Karin G.
Is there anything we should know before coming to class, i.e. wear closed-toe shoes? Wear long sleeves?
Answer from Jenn C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi! The school advises students to wear shop-appropriate clothing, which means closed-toed and comfortable shoes (suitable for extended periods of standing), no loose or hanging items (includes jewelry, ties, scarves, etc. and long hair should be tied back). They provide eye and ear protection plus respirators, which are optional. Hope this helps!
Answer from Cody C. Verified Student
Probably best to wear closed-toe shoes in case you drop pieces of wood or clamps as you're working.
