Description
Class Level: Beginner
Age Requirements: 18 and older
Average Class Size: 10
Teacher: Lynne Levin

What you'll learn in this fashion design class:

In the fashion world, new clothing designs are presented in the form of hand-drawn sketches before being chosen to go into production. Designers start with a croquis, a quick sketch of the traditional fashion figure that serves as the basis for the design of clothing and accessories, then add color and details to the garments.

This is a basic course in making a designer’s sketch, in which students work from live models to learn drawing skills, fundamental anatomy, and the dynamics of movement in preparation for producing fashion illustrations. Attention is given to both the fashion figure and human proportions.

Prerequisites: none

You will learn:
  • How to successfully draw a balanced, well-proportioned fashion figure.
  • How to draw a designer’s sketch using a live model.
  • How to represent human anatomy, garment shapes, fabric draping and types, textures, pattern and line quality in your drawings.
  • Ideas, inspiration, and a variety of techniques used to solve fashion design challenges.
Benefits:
  • Learn to work in a loose, artistic manner in larger paper formats (14x17).
  • Develop personalized illustration style and “fashion look” through model observation.
  • Gain knowledge in detailed analyses of various professional artwork examples and styles.
  • Master various media, which will be introduced during step-by-step instructors' demonstrations.
  • How to develop a quick and accurate methodology of fashion design sketching from models.

Note:
Class price includes a $40 one-time registration fee.

Location:
Course locations are TBD and subject to change. Exact locations will be communicated prior to class.

Important:
This course is offered through Continuing Education at The New School. Students who have already created an online account at the New School should register for classes directly on NewSchool.edu/continuing-education/classes
School Notes:

How to Get Your Newcard:

The Newcard will provide students with a host of additional benefits. In order to claim your New School ID, please visit our office, located at 72 Fifth Avenue, lower level. You will have to present another valid form of photo ID, like a driver's license or passport. Your name must be spelled the same way on your driver's license (or other form of ID) as it is in the New School database; any discrepancy will result in delays in issuing a card.

You may not receive your ID card in time before class. You can print a copy of your registration from my.newschool.edu (Academics Tab -> View Class Schedule and Locations) and present it to security with a photo ID in lieu of the ID card.

Once you receive your ID card you should go to accounts.newschool.edu to obtain your NetID using your N# which is on the ID card. Once you have your NetID you can reset your password. Then using your Net ID + Password, you can log into my.newschool.edu to view your class location, course schedule, and New School announcements.

Alternatively you can call the Reg office (212.229.5620) and they will give the N# to you over the phone after you answer some identifying questions.

Course locations may change up into the first week of classes. Students are usually asked to check their room location the day of or night before their first class. Usually when there is a location change after the first day of class the instructor will send out an email notifying all students on the roster. This is less likely to happen though.

You can also check a location by going to Class Meeting Locations (on www.newschool.edu/registrar, under the Related Links section on the lower right side of the page). You will need to know your subject's subject code or select all subject codes to search.
