Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this medical training:

For the thousands of Americans living with conditions that require daily care and supervision, the assistance of home health aides (or HHAs) is invaluable. When a patient is elderly, physically disabled, terminally ill, or otherwise unable to care for themselves, being able to live at home rather than in long-term facility or hospital care allows him or her to retain an important measure of personal freedom. With the help of a home health aide (reporting to other medical professionals), a patient can maintain some level of independence and comfort.

What a Home Health Aide Does

The daily duties of a home health aide are many, and they generally include tasks like monitoring vitals, administering prescribed medications, assisting with personal hygiene, helping patients dress and groom, replacing sterile dressings, and even preparing meals. Advanced HHAs may even be tasked with helping the patient use specialized medical equipment (e.g., ventilators).

Because the family and friends of elderly or ill persons cannot always take on the responsibilities of caring for their loved one, home health aides very commonly work with homebound seniors or recently discharged hospital patients.

A home health aide in NYC is not always in charge of caring for an older adult. One can provide assistance to anyone who needs it, from a person with a chronic illness to someone with a permanent disability or cognitive impairment. With preparation at home health aide schools, these professionals emerge from a program equipped to:
  • Help clients with daily personal tasks at home.
  • Follow the client’s care plan and report on progress.
  • Tend to laundry, vacuuming, and other housekeeping activities.
  • Manage the client’s schedule and doctors’ appointments.
  • Arrange transportation to medical offices and other locations.
  • Handle grocery shopping and meal preparation.
  • Help clients maintain their social connections.
Home health aide schools also prepare students to provide basic health-related services. The medical capacity of the health aide is established by state law, so their responsivities in this area can vary from one state to another. Home health aide training in NYC covers the assistance an aide can provide in New York, including checking a client’s temperature, pulse, and respiration rate and providing medications and assisting with prescribed exercises.

The duties of a home health aide aren’t limited to providing medical assistance. However, these services are vital for an individual who requires comprehensive care at home and may work under the supervision of a nurse or other medical professional. However, a caregiver can be an important companion as well, cooking, cleaning, and even accompanying the client for walks and trips to social outings. A caregiver may also drive them to and from a variety of destinations whenever necessary.
