Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this excel class:

The Excel at Excel workshop is designed for students who are relatively familiar with other office productivity software, for example, Microsoft Word. (The students who succeed the most are comfortable using a computer and navigating around desktop programs on their own). It introduces a range of Excel topics giving students a taste of the potential that can be achieved with Excel and touches briefly on everything from navigation and layout to using functions and charts.

This workshop was not designed to go over any topic in extreme detail, but more as a "sampler" of topics. The expectation is for students to be able to leave and be familiar with several of the Excel skills necessary for most positions that require some "basic to intermediate" Excel knowledge. This course is excellent prep for General Assembly's Data Analytics Courses.

Agenda (Not necessarily taught in the order below):

  • Terminology and Navigation
  • Formatting and Filling
  • Data Organization and Filtering
  • Conditional Formatting
  • Hiding and Grouping
  • Introduction to Formulas
  • Functions
  • Basic Math Functions
  • Conditional Math Functions
  • Reference Functions
  • Basic Data Cleaning
  • Defined Names
  • PivotTables
  • Charts
  • Freezing Views
  • Adding Notes and Comment

Takeaways

  • Input, gather, prep, and format data for more productive use and sharing.
  • Analyze data to improve decision making.
  • Save or export data, tables, and charts for others to use or view

Preparation

  • Students should have a general familiarity with Excel including knowing how to navigate a spreadsheet and how to copy & paste.
  • Please bring a laptop with Microsoft 2016 or 2019 installed (PC or Mac) but please note there may be minor differences between Microsoft's implementation on the two platforms.
  • It is also highly recommended that you have a mouse.
  • A second monitor or tablet is not required but highly recommended.
  • Students will be emailed case study files prior to class that they should download to their desktop.
  • This is an interactive class, and your participation and questions are encouraged.
  • This class will occur completely online so students should also have a laptop or computer with at least 4GB RAM and a working microphone and camera.
  • Class pre-work will be distributed via email which will include detailed instructions for downloading Zoom and Slack (where the class will be hosted).
  • An internet connection of at least 10 Mpbs download speed is also highly recommended.

School Notes:
For students enrolling in 12 week part time and immersive classes, it is not recommended that you book more than one class simultaneously.

More PC focused than Mac. Spent a ton of time trying to search for the corresponding shortcuts and keys. Maybe create a Excel for Mac class?

Unfortunately, the class was PC - based and I have a Mac....so a lot of what was covered did not help me at all. The instructor did what he could to let us know what was different for Mac users, but obviously with limited time and with him being knowledgeable in PC, it wasn't much.

If I would have known that the Teacher only know how to teach excel for PC I would have brought my HP Laptop. This class was a waste of my money and time, been in class 2 hours now and everyone but 1 other person have mac book, the teacher don't know how to teach us using mac book, he have to keep looking up cheat short cuts to teach us. I could have use google if I wanted to learn this way. in the class description it state you can be teach using a mac book also.

Many students did not meet the prerequisites of the class (basic computer skills and basic knowledge of Excel). We only covered approximately half of the material because the instructor was busy answering questions about how to connect to the internet, use a mouse, or how to copy and paste. In the future, I would suggest highlighting the prerequisites so that students that do meet the minimum are not wasting their money.

You should specify in the description if it is a class for pc or mac. We wasted so much time trying to clarify what the short cuts were for mac.
