Julia Elsas

Teaches at Textile Arts Center

Julia Elsas was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. In 2000, she received a BA in Studio Art from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. After college she relocated to Carrboro, North Carolina. In 2005, she was chosen as one of thirty contemporary North Carolina artists to exhibit work at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh and the Mint Museum in Charlotte. That same year she had a solo show at Branch Gallery in Carrboro. In 2009, Elsas graduated with an MFA in Art Studio from the University of California at Davis. While studying at Davis, she was a Joan Mitchell Foundation Nominee, received the Robert Arneson Award, the Fay Nelson Award, two Freedmond Gadberry Student Awards, and a Graduate Research Grant. After graduating, her work was included in Cream, from the top, an annual exhibition in Northern California that features the work of recent Bay Area MFA graduates. Her work was also included in Fresh Young Things: New Talent from Northern California at JAYJAY gallery in Sacramento. She was an Artist Fellow at Virginia Center for Creative Arts in Amherst, Virginia in 2009 and 2010 as well as an Artist-in-Resident at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley in 2010. Her work was recently included in Missing/Missed at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn, and she will have a print in the IPCNY’s New Prints/Summer 2011 exhibition. She currently lives in Brooklyn.
