Maria Katzman

Teaches at Maria Katzman Art

Maria Katzman’s Cabin paintings chronicle a six-year residency at the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Artists colony, and reflect the artist’s careful observation of nature, framed by the cabin’s simple architecture. Her cabin paintings often derive from simplified geometric shapes that shift constantly across the permeable borders between abstraction and naturalism. She uses the quiet geometry of the cabins as a lyrical counterpoint to the dense forest, a blanket of snow or the seasons’ changing light. Maria strives for a painterly brevity born of the discipline of attending to what is immediate.

Maria Katzman, born and raised in Wilmette, IL, received her BFA from The Kansas City Art Institute in 1984, and her MFA from Yale University in 1988. She was awarded a fellowship to the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture between her undergraduate and graduate school years. Several years after moving to New York City, Maria established a studio in Woodstock, New York and was an artist in residence during the summers, at the Byrdcliffe Artist’s Colony, from 2006- 2011. In the summer of 2012, she traveled to Turkey to paint at the “Babayan Culture House,” an Artist in Residence Program in Cappadocia.

Her recent 2014 exhibitions include “A View Of Woodstock,” at the WFG Gallery, in Woodstock, NY, and “Quiet Time,” a one-person exhibition of her Cabin Paintings, at Greene County Council on the Arts in Catskill, New York. In 2012 she exhibited her Cabin series in a one-person show at Adelphi University in Long Island, NY. Her work has been exhibited in the Hudson Valley, New York City, and throughout the country including the Fletcher Gallery, Woodstock, NY, Windham Fine Arts Gallery, Windham, NY, Catskill Mountain Foundation, Hunter, NY, Bowery Gallery, NYC, Artists Space, NYC, New York University, NYC, Wendy Cooper Gallery Madison, WI, and the Ferrin Gallery, Lenox, MA. Her Heart painting that was included in GCCA’s fundraiser last January has been chosen for the cover of an Ulster Publishing special section on Love and Marriage, for the January 29, 2015 publication.

Maria lives and works in New York City where she has taught art to children and adults for over twenty years. Most recently she taught art at Saint David’s School, Kindergarten through 6th grades. From 2006 to 2007 she was a visiting artist at Adelphi University where she also taught a color theory course to M.A. students.
