Class Description

Description

The National Marine Corps Museum features a remarkable collection of artifacts, photographs, and exhibits spanning the Marine Corps' history from 1774 to the present. This 120,000-square-foot facility, located on a 135-acre site adjacent to Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, showcases distinct galleries devoted to major conflicts, including World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and Korea. The museum's soaring architecture evokes the famous flag-raisers of Iwo Jima and invites visitors to explore world-class interactive exhibits using cutting-edge technology surrounded by irreplaceable artifacts.

A unique feature of this museum: tripods are allowed, which is uncommon in most museums. Most artifacts and figures are displayed openly without glass barriers, allowing you to position your camera at dramatic angles and capture compelling images.

One particularly immersive experience is the Korean War gallery, where shells burst around you in a darkened, freezing cold environment. You can get your camera right into the faces of life-size Marines in full combat gear, creating powerful photographic opportunities. The museum's design and lighting present excellent challenges for practicing white balance and exposure control.

In this photography workshop, the instructor will teach you how to capture strong action shots within this dynamic museum environment, focusing on camera techniques and settings specific to low-light conditions. Participants carpool from the Washington DC area and meet at the museum entrance, accessible from the Quantico exit on Interstate 95.
