  I’ve been looking for a stone carving class for a while. I’m so glad I found this one. First, the Compleat Sculpture is an amazing place.The entire staff is so nice and knowledgeable. The quarry took my breath away. My teacher Alex is amazing. I learned so much the first day about the nuances of each tool. He helped me every step. He’s so knowledgeable and kind. I love my class . I can’t recommend Alex enough.

  Amazing course! Carlos is a wonderful instructor and human. The people I met in the course had been taking sculpture courses for a while and were more advanced. Everyone was encouraging and lovely! Will go back for sure!

  James Barbour offers a rare combination of being a master painter & sculptor together with being an amazing teacher. He is motivated to teach, gives of himself, and enjoys seeing students learn and grow. He is insightful and patient with an incredible understanding of anatomy of the human form. The studio has lots of character and offers a warm environment to work. I learned more than I imagined about drawing sculpting and anatomy. A gem of a find in NYC. Highly recommended.

  It was a very informative and educational class in stone carving. My professor was a renowned stone carver with expertise in the craft and in teaching it. The community of fellows in the class was likewise inspiring. I would definitely do it again!

  Eleni was a highly skilled and kind teacher who easily walked us through the basics of pottery. Both me and my partner were pretty new to the hobby, so she met us where we are. I would consider the course a great value for the amount I paid, and would recommend it to anyone interested. If it were a recurring class, I would definitely consider taking it again.

  I highly recommend this course, especially if you're looking for a class with a lot of guidance and one on one instruction. James is an excellent teacher. He's incredibly knowledgable, personable and professional. This class was a combination of anatomy lectures and hands on modeling. I learned a lot and was very happy with my finished model. I also appreciated the casual class environment. There were often other students working on drawing or painting projects and James would invite conversation around the student work.

  Our instructor was excellent! I learned so much about building an armature, clay tools, measuring out proportions of the face, and many helpful techniques for sculpting facial features.

  I loved my experience. Ailene was a great instructor. Her artistry and care came through in every moment, and I felt very inspired. She wasn't overly intrusive, but I did feel supported whenever I had questions. The facilities were great. I discovered a new hobby, which I am still doing to this day. Everyone should try stone carving!

  I liked the size of the class, which was small enough to get full attention from the teacher but also with enough people to get their feedback and for a fun class energy. I will go back as soon as I have a bit of free time in my schedule :) It was really rewarding!

  My Figure Sculpting with clay class at 92Y was more than I expected! We were a small group of people and had a live model every session. My teacher was knowledgeable, approachable, and provided the ambiance to feel creative. Even though it was the first time I did any sort of sculpture, the teacher made me feel like I was doing a good job which led me to feel comfortable. If you are looking for a creative outlet and want to learn how to figure sculpt, this is the class for you at a reasonable price and quality!

  What a wonderful course! Super setting, instructor, model, and other students. It was highly informative, and fun, and pushed me (in a good way) to become more comfortable and informed about sculpting the human figure. I love that it was broken down into multiple sessions, plenty of extra time if needed, and super loving and joyful overall. I highly recommend it if you're even considering it.

  In short, this class was a revelation. When I signed up for this class I did not consider myself an artist, and certainly not a sculptor. James showed me otherwise. He is as talented a teacher, as he is a fine artist. I learned so much in this course. It’s more than just sculpting, it’s anatomy, philosophy, drafting, studying light and shadow and more. This class was honestly an inspiration. It allowed me to pursue artistic abilities I didn’t know I had. Abilities we all have and maybe just haven’t nurtured enough. I am proud of what I made and proud to call myself a sculptor now. I look forward to working with James again on another project and would highly recommend this class to anyone interested in sculpture. Two thumbs up. 10/10. 5-stars.

  Love this class. I have not sculpted before, but I feel confident I will love my piece when it is done thanks to Douglas. He is patient and spends a lot of time giving great direction. Already signed up for another series .

  This was my first try at polymer clay, and the teacher, Valerie Hall, was wonderful. The atmosphere was friendly and generous, and Valerie found time to assist all of us. I left each class with a completed project in hand and new knowledge of various techniques. I gained the confidence to work on my own, and plan to attend more of Valerie's classes, both to learn and have fun. Also, the 92nd Street Y's work studio and facilities are excellent. All the tools we needed were there, and the room was bright, clean and organized.

  What a beautiful place! I was definitely impressed! Today I took the Precious Metal Clay class with Amy and I loved it! Amy is very organized, and explains and demonstrates everything so well- there is no way you can't learn from her. She rocks!

  James is an excellent artist and teacher and all around great guy. He is inspiring to work with and seems to truly enjoy getting the best out of his students. This is a great starter starter course but also worth taking if you have some experience sculpting. James is very hands on, not afraid to criticize but also very motivational.

  This was a great class! Great to have two teachers, so that everyone could get guidance. Definitely recommend and will be taking it again! Do wish it was a little smaller in terms of the number of students. But otherwise, I learned so much from Jesse and Cynthia, they were amazing. They each have there own way of doing things, which at first can be a bit confusing. But in the long run, I think it's really beneficial because you get two different methods & two different design eyes to guide you. I learned so much in this class and was shocked at how much progress I made in the end!

  This was a great introduction to what can be achieved by applying patinas to metal, resin and even foam. So many possibilities that I wasn’t aware of before taking this class. Marc was is very knowledgable, was very clear in his explanations and I’ll definitely be going back to learn more.

  The silver clay workshop with Amy was very informative and fun. I was able to make a beautiful pendant and have already received several compliments on it! Working with the silver clay was a new experience for me, and I would like to do it again. The class is the perfect length to make something nice. I would recommend this class to anyone who wants to learn the basics of silver clay and make something nice on their very first try. Amy, the instructor, was really nice and took her time to answer questions and help each class member individually with his or her project.

  The art supply shop "the Compleat Sculptor" was very well stocked and the Staff were SUPER Helpful. The class was very informative, especially for me, since I have had mixed success with patina applications.   It was a great experience, James was a great artist and teacher and super nice. The please from the inside was above my expectations, I thought it would be just a normal school but actually it was where James lives and it was full of great art pieces that was done by James, his wife and there students, there were a couple of rooms each one of them is for a different type of art. It was a good experience and I totally recommend it.

  I truly enjoyed the class. Very freeform and casual with just the right amount of instruction and assistance from the teacher. Some loaner tools available and stone must be purchased separately. Also the location at “The Compleat Sculptor “ enhances the experience.

  This class was so inspiring, and this was the first time I have ever sculpted. Dionisio Cimarelli, scuptor and teacher, gave consistent individual as well as overall guidance to students that were at different levels. He was incredibly passionate and patient, and continuously pointed out what needed to be adjusted...even if he had just said it 15 minutes before.......this is how you learn. It was relaxing and fun...I will be back for more!
