What you'll learn in this sewing machine class:

Ready to pick up that needle and thread for the first time and only have a few hours? Or finally take that sewing machine you bought out of the box and put it to good use?

With this workshop we are going back to the basics, starting from scratch, and taking you step by step through all the essentials to make learning to sew a fun and inspiring experience.

This class is perfect for complete beginners & people who have sewn in the past but need a refresher without commit to a 6 week class. You will learn how to competently use a sewing machine and complete a tote bag.

During this course you will learn:

  • All of the necessary sewing terminology & equipment.
  • How to make the perfect tote bag.
  • Over 6 different types of stitches & seam finishes you can complete using a sewing machine!

PROJECTS: Tote bag

FABRIC AND SUPPLIES: Sewing kits provided

PREREQUISITE: None!

For Virtual Classes 

After you book the class you will be registered for the time selected and we will send you a link to join the class virtually the day of the class! We will be using Zoom so you’ll be able to interact with the group and asks questions. Supplies needed for class will be shipped upon registration. All Supplies included!


Remote Learning

This course is available for "remote" learning and will be available to anyone with access to an internet device with a microphone (this includes most models of computers, tablets). Classes will take place with a "Live" instructor at the date/times listed below.

Upon registration, the instructor will send along additional information about how to log-on and participate in the class.

Also - I have a Jenome 2212, sewing machine. Is it comparable to the Janome Sewist 500 you'll be using for the class. Do I have to have that sewing machine in order to learn? Thank You, Z

Hi. I m a 60+ adult never operate a showing machine before. Like to learn some basics to see a mask. Is this just a 2 hrs class. Or can I attend the class repeatedly if I can't get it ..I don't know whether I might have difficulty get all the basics in one "2" hr class.

Usually, it's a one time class that you'd have to pay for again if you wanted to repeat. Most of the virtual classes I've taken provide you with a powerpoint to keep for reference, though.

Are we able to bring our own fabric? Saw the photo from below, but is that the only fabric we can choose from?

Hi Daisy! For this class, the school provides materials for the project. All tote bags are made from denim. The student is welcome to provide their own fabric, but it needs to be cut and prepared before they arrive, and they recommend staying away from anything shiny, slippery, sheer, sequined, etc. The dimensions of the cut piece of fabric are 14"x36".

Hi there! Generally, this class is geared toward adults, but they do teach children as well. They would recommend a private lesson instead. Private lessons are $60/hour, and they can teach the same skills and project as the Sewing Machine Basics Workshop, or they can gear the lesson to something more specific if she has another project in mind. Hi there! Sewing Center provides the Janome Sewist 500 sewing machines. If you would like to bring your own machine, a private lesson might be a better option. Hope that helps!

It was a very fun and informative class. I’ve been avoiding sewing machines all my life because they were frustrating to learn on my own. This class made it so simple! I hardly had any issues making the project. I recommend if you are feeling timid about learning. It’s worth it!

The instructor is very knowledgeable about sewing and is there to really guide you as you make your project. She explains everything without making assumptions that you know something about sewing which is good because it reinforces or corrects what you think you knew. Students were at different levels but she was able to accommodate all levels of learning.

Class was really great. Anthony was an amazing instructor. Class was fast but thorough which was perfect. He really made everything understandable but we wasted no time. I would highly recommend to others.
