Description

Our mission is to educate, inspire and empower people to build and fix rather than consume and dispose. We do that by providing affordable access to shop space, the right tools for the job, and small classes led by craftspeople who love to teach.

We believe everyone should experience the satisfaction of working with your hands and being part of a creative community that values craft, sustainability, resource sharing, and resiliency. Our focus on woodworking comes from a passion for this warm, organic and sustainable material and because it is a practical and relatively easy way for beginners to start making.

Started in 2008 with just a handful of classes and a bare bones shop, Makeville has grown into NYC's top venue to learn woodworking and a rare commodity: affordable shared shop space. Our members are a community of craftspeople, artists and makers of diverse backgrounds and skill levels, but we share a common culture of professionalism, shop etiquette and safety. Join us and find out why a shop is so much more than tools and bench space.

This class was awesome! We learned the basics of turning and had a chance to try a variety of tools and techniques related to the trade. It was very hands on and Alan was a great instructor. Would highly recommend this class as an introduction to turning.

Taught by Michelle - she's a great teacher and very talented at what she does. I had no real experience with power tools and feel like I learned a ton. Class was very fun and light, but felt kind of intense how much you have to learn to put the project together. Definitely felt it was worth the time and the money for the experience. Felt invigorated after every class, even in the middle of the week, and hey this table's pretty good. Excited to do more - thanks Michelle!

I thought it was good though since we didn’t set up the machines ourselves (which I assume was partly due to time / partly safety), replicating the project would be difficult. However, this was a good introductory class and the project included a lot of different elements. I think I’ll take another class to feel more comfortable on the machines.

Steven is a very good instructor - very knowledgeable, friendly, and an imaginative problem solver. The class is well planed and is as described in the course description.

Finished the class with a hand constructed table! Instructor Kate was very knowledgeable. Despite the small class limit (6), pace was a little slower than would have liked due to having only one machine, waiting for others to finish using.

The workshop was a phenominal experience! The instructors clearly mapped out the project from the start, demonstrated the appropriate methods of using each machine, explained what to check before beginning work on each process, and maintained a friendly, professional attitude at all times. Limiting the class to 6 students allowed everyone's questions to be answered and provided the perfect balance for working individually and as part of the team. Watching other students use the machinery reinforced the steps we were taught to follow in set up, use, and safety. All materials necessary were provided. I look forward to continuing my education at Makeville Studio through additional classes, booking and booking studio time. I highly recommend this studio and this Workshop.
